Mayor Dwyer’s Column
Greenwood Lake Mayor
By Jesse Dwyer
As I write this column, we’re planning on Monday and Tuesday’s significant snowfall. In planning for the snow, I’d like to remind our residents of proper snow removal procedures. First, it is illegal to throw snow from your driveway, walkway, sidewalk or elsewhere onto the roads. This creates an extremely hazardous situation for drivers and prolongs the cleanup process for the DPW and grounds crews. Cleaning of sidewalks remains the responsibility of the property owner. Although we use discretion in one’s ability to clean a sidewalk and understand that it may take longer for some, the law states that a sidewalk must be cleaned for pedestrians within 10 hours after the conclusion of the storm. However, the 10 hours is not counted between the hours of 7:00p.m. and 7:00am. Meaning, if the storm ends at 9:00p.m., you have until 5:00p.m. the following day to clear the sidewalk. If sidewalks are unclear, pedestrians are forced to walk in the streets. If you have a fire hydrant in front of your property, we would greatly appreciate any and all assistance removing the snow from them. We will go around to dig out hydrants but that will be after the storm concludes.
I would also like to thank all of the residents who display patience during snow emergencies. I understand that real life forces us to venture out and take care of responsibilities. Not everyone can stay home. But if you have the opportunity to stay in during poor weather, please do so. Our DPW crews, Grounds and public safety officials including Fire, Police and EMS put their lives on the line to ensure that everyone stays safe out there. Please give them a hand and stay home.
