Mayor Dwyer’s Column

July 2, 2013

There are many instances in a nation’s history when memorable moments affect changes in its future. None, however, are more memorable or more crucial than America’s declaration of independence from England in 1776. The nation that we have become today is the result of an idea and a multitude of sacrifices, both of life and property, made to insure that we, the citizens of the United States of America, can be a free people, deciders of our own fate and our own future.

Over this holiday weekend, when celebrating the life and the opportunities that we all have as Americans, I urge you to think back and reflect upon the difficulties that ensued leading up to, as well as the days and years after that day 1776, which granted us these freedoms, then cherish them and enjoy them. For without the sacrifices of those before us, and the creation of that idea, we would not be the greatest nation on Earth, as we are today.
